Maybe you’ve used it to treat some other underlying medical condition. Maybe you’ve used it to spice up a dish or two. Whatever the situation is, there is no denying that people have been using turmeric for centuries for medicinal and cooking purposes. However, people are now starting to widely use it for its potential sexual benefits.

A Background On Turmeric

Turmeric can be dated back to 2500 BC, where traces were found in pots. Since this time the substance has emerged as an important medicine in Ayurvedic healing. Back in 500 BC, the substance was widely used to purify the blood and skin as well as treating some forms of epilepsy, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections. Ayurvedic, although not as popular as it once was, is a form of healing that is still widely used today in parts of India. The term ayurvedic comes from the terms ayur, which means life and veda, which means knowledge. So, the term basically translates into life knowledge.

That aside, turmeric plays a key role in this form of healing. It is believed that the Ayurveda system has three energies that correspond with the human psychological system. Vata is connected to the nervous system, pitta is connected to the digestive system, and Kapha is connected to the lymphatic system. When all three are present at one time, it is believed that a person will be blessed with good health. Turmeric was believed to play a huge role within this system. While the powder form of the substance was used as an insect repellent, it was also used to alleviate skin conditions like eczema, ringworm, and other parasitic conditions. The juice form of the substance was applied to help relieve pain and swelling with sprains and other injuries. More about ayurveda here.

What About The Aphrodisiac Properties?

Throughout history, it was also believed that turmeric and sex went hand and hand. Well, now thanks to technology and modern science, people know exactly why this was the case. A study conducted in 2016 and published in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology showed that consumption of turmeric could increase testosterone serum totals in rats. A subsequent study showed that it could do the same thing for humans, although the increase was much smaller than that compared to the lab rats. However, just the slightest dose of turmeric can cause a significant increase in good cholesterol.
